Rose Quartz Fox Spirit Pendant — 49 mm

Rose quartz at the translucent end of the range — clear enough that the carving reads from behind as well as from the front, which ordinary cloudy material will not do. Hold it to a window and the whole relief comes through in reverse. The pink is barely present in shade and arrives properly in daylight.

Carved on one face as a húlí jīng — a fox spirit. She appears in Chinese folklore for the better part of two thousand years, and travels from there into Japanese and Korean stories as the kitsune and the kumiho. The carving gives her the form the tales give her: a woman in flowing robes, the fox itself held against her. The older sources are not moralistic about her. She is neither good nor wicked, only very old and very clever — a creature that has lived long enough to learn how to change shape.

A gold-tone wire bail is fitted at the top. No chain is included — the bail is open enough to take a cord or a chain of your own, and at this size most people will want to choose their own length. At 49 mm this is a statement piece rather than a small charm; it has real weight against the chest.
