Rutilated Quartz Bracelet, Multicolour — 13 mm

Rutilated quartz at 13 mm, which is where the material starts to show what it is doing. On a small bead an inclusion is a fleck; at this size you can follow a needle across the whole width and see where it stops.

The colour comes from what the needles are made of — iron oxides mostly, running rust to copper to a pale gold — set against quartz that ranges from water-clear to lightly smoked. A few beads carry green. The mix is the point; an even strand of this would mean it had been sorted into dullness.
