Worry Stone, Oval — 45 mm

A flat oval of polished stone, about 4.5 × 3.5 cm, with a shallow hollow on one face that fits the pad of your thumb. Hold it, run your thumb across the hollow, put it back in your pocket. That is the whole of it.

The habit is old and turns up in many places: something smooth to keep a restless hand busy. What it does, as far as we can tell, is give your attention somewhere small to go for a minute. We make no larger claim than that.

Eighteen stones:

Dream Amethyst — purple quartz banded with white.
Tiger's Eye — honey-gold over brown, with a band of light that moves as the stone turns.
Red Agate — translucent orange-red. Said plainly: red agate is commonly heated or dyed to deepen the colour, and we assume this has been.
Crazy Lace Agate — cream and yellow, swirled with brick red.
Red Jasper — opaque brick red.
Yellow Jade — warm honey-yellow, translucent at the edges. This is a trade name — the stone is not jadeite or nephrite.
Lapis Lazuli — deep blue with plenty of white and grey matrix; an everyday grade.
White Howlite — chalk white with fine grey veining, left undyed.
Labradorite — grey, with a flash of colour at the right angle.
Obsidian — volcanic glass, polished black.
Blue Aventurine — periwinkle blue with a faint glitter.
Clear Quartz — clear to milky white.
Rose Quartz — soft, milky pink.
Sodalite — deep royal blue veined with white and peach.
Strawberry Quartz — red-pink quartz with darker flecks through it.
Moss Agate — translucent, with green inclusions that grow through it like moss — mineral, not plant.
African Bloodstone — grey-green with patches of red.
Goldstone — glittering red-brown. Said plainly: goldstone is not a natural stone — it is glass with tiny copper crystals grown through it.

Each stone is natural except the goldstone, so colour and pattern vary from piece to piece. Photos are the maker's and show representative pieces; yours will differ.
