A small wire tree strung with 54 polished crystal chips — amethyst and yellow quartz mixed through six branches — rising from an amber-coloured treasure bowl.

The form is Chinese. A crystal tree set in a 聚宝盆 — a treasure bowl, the kind that in folk stories never runs empty — sits on desks, shop counters and entry tables as a wish that things go well. Our supplier calls this two-tone version 万事顺遂: may everything go smoothly. It is a wish, not a mechanism, and we pass it on as one.

Said plainly: the purple chips are amethyst. The yellow chips are sold as citrine, and at this price citrine is amethyst that has been heated until the colour turns gold — the same quartz as the purple chips, and a long-standing, ordinary treatment. The bowl is moulded, not stone, and the small gold ingots inside it are decorative.

The branches are soft wire and usually arrive pressed together from shipping. Bend them gently back into shape with your fingers — that is expected, not damage.
