Citrine Cathedral Geode, Matched Pair — 16 in

Two halves of a single geode, split down the middle and set side by side. Each half is a tall cathedral shape: a dark basalt shell, a band of white chalcedony, and a dense lining of golden-orange quartz points inside. Each stands on its own flat base, about 16 inches tall.

Said plainly: this is heat-treated amethyst. Natural citrine almost never forms as a geode like this. The gold in a piece like this comes from heating an amethyst geode until the colour in the quartz turns from purple to yellow and orange. Look along the rim and you can still see a thin line of violet where the original colour survived. Heating is a long-standing, ordinary treatment for quartz.

You can buy the matched pair, or either half on its own. The left half is the one on the left in the photos (14.90 kg); the right half is the one on the right (15.40 kg). These are the exact pieces that ship. Once either half sells, the pair is no longer available, and if the pair sells, both halves go with it.

A geode begins as a hollow in cooling volcanic rock. Over a long time, silica-rich water seeps in, first lining the walls with banded chalcedony, then growing quartz crystals inward toward the empty centre. The dark outer skin is the basalt it formed in.

The orange dots and weight labels in the photos are the supplier's stickers, not part of the stone.

Each half weighs about 15 kg (33 lb). Lift from the base with both hands, never by the rim or the crystals, and set it on a level surface that can take the weight. The points can chip if knocked. Dust with a soft, dry brush. Like amethyst, it is best kept out of strong direct sun.
