Gold Sheen Obsidian Disc, Sun and Moon — 55 mm

Gold sheen obsidian is volcanic glass with a bronze shimmer laid through it. Lava cooled too fast to crystallise; microscopic gas bubbles caught in the flow were stretched and aligned before it set, and they now throw light back as a single band. Tilt the disc and the gold sweeps across the whole face at once.

Carved in low relief on one face: a taijitu whose two lobes are a radiant sun and a crescent moon, with stars, cloud and falling rain worked into the ground around them. The reverse is plain and polished.

The relief lights up in sequence as the disc turns, because the sheen arrives as one moving band rather than lighting the whole face at once.
