Cactus Amethyst Spirit Quartz on Stand — Choose Your Specimen

Spirit quartz from South Africa, often sold as cactus quartz or cactus amethyst for an obvious reason: each piece is one main crystal whose faces are covered in a second growth of tiny quartz points, so the whole thing bristles like a cactus. Every specimen comes on its own gold-tone wire stand with a clear acrylic base.

Each specimen is photographed on its own. The letter in the top-left corner of the photo matches the option above, and the label beside it gives that piece's size and weight. Every piece is one of a kind and the piece in the photo is the one that ships. Once a letter sells, it's gone.

Spirit quartz grows in two stages. First a larger quartz crystal forms. Later, fresh silica-bearing fluid moves through the same cavity and deposits thousands of very small crystals across the faces of the older one, all pointing outward. The purple is amethyst: quartz coloured by trace iron and natural radiation. The rust, orange and golden tones are iron oxide that coated the crystals as they grew. How much purple and how much rust varies from piece to piece, which is why no two look alike.

The small points on the surface are delicate and can chip. Lift each piece by its base or by the stand rather than by the points, and dust with a soft dry brush.
