Colombian Lemurian Quartz Point No. 19 — Rainbow, 4.2 cm

A Lemurian quartz point from the Peñas Blancas area of Colombia. “Lemurian” is a crystal-trade name rather than a separate mineral: it means quartz whose prism faces carry fine horizontal growth lines — the ladder-like striations running across the sides of this point. The name took hold among Brazilian dealers in the late 1990s; Peñas Blancas material is known for its clarity and crisp striations.

This is No. 19 of a small group we photographed one by one. The number in the top-left corner of each photo is this piece, and the label beside it gives its size and weight. It is one of a kind: the point in the photos and video is the one that ships.

Formations on this piece
Etching — frosted, slightly dissolved patches on the faces, left by fluid that moved through after the crystal formed.
Rainbow — an internal plane that splits light into spectral colours when it catches the light at the right angle.

These are the names the crystal trade uses for particular face shapes and markings. They describe the geometry of the crystal, nothing more.

Quartz is hard (7 on the Mohs scale), but the edges of the tip and the striations can still chip if knocked. Keep it away from other crystals and hard surfaces, and dust it with a soft dry brush. The stand in the photos is a display prop and is not included.
