Tiger's Eye Bracelet, Gold & Blue

Gold and blue in the same bead. Tiger's eye and its blue form, hawk's eye, are one stone: quartz threaded with fine crocidolite fibre, every fibre running the same way. Where the iron in that fibre has altered, the colour turns honey-gold. Where it has not, it stays blue-black. Most material is one or the other. In this material the change stopped partway, so a single bead can hold both, with the boundary running straight through it.

In China it is sold as 梦幻虎眼 — “dream tiger's eye.” That is a trade name. The stone underneath is tiger's eye, caught partway through its colour change.

The band of light that slides across each bead as your wrist turns — chatoyancy — crosses both colours without a break, because the fibre keeps its direction even where the colour changes. Turn your wrist slowly and you can watch one line of light pass from gold into steel blue.

At 6 mm the strand is fine and quick — small flashes of gold and steel, easy to stack with other pieces. At 8 mm it reads as a mix, flecks of gold and blue across the wrist. By 10 mm individual beads start to show their split. At 12 mm each bead is large enough that the boundary becomes the point, and the band of light is wide and easy to follow.

No two strands share the same balance of gold and blue, and within a strand some beads lean almost entirely one way. Photos show a representative strand; yours will differ.
