Clear quartz is the commonest gem mineral on earth. Clear quartz at 14 mm with no visible cotton, no fracture planes and nothing at all to catch the eye is not common at all, and that is the whole of what this strand is. Rough clean enough to cut beads this large at this clarity is a small fraction of what comes out of the ground; the rest becomes smaller beads, or carvings, or gravel.

What you get for it is optical. The beads transmit rather than scatter, so they take colour from whatever is around them — warm indoors, blue near a window — and hold a bright point of light wherever the strongest source is. Held up to a page you can read through them.
