Labradorite Guardian Figure — 58 mm

A winged figure carved from labradorite — standing, robed, wings folded down the back and gathered at the base. The stone is grey-silver at rest; turned into the light, gold and warm orange run across the wings and the folds of the robe and then go out again.

That behaviour is the constraint a carver of this material works against. The flash only appears where the microscopic layers inside the feldspar sit at the right angle to the cut surface, so the orientation of the whole figure has to be decided in the rough, before anything is shaped. Get it wrong and you have a grey statue.

This one is hand-carved rather than machine-shaped, which is the harder way to meet that constraint: the colour appears and disappears under the tool as the surface moves, and the carver has to keep working toward a figure while reading a light that will not hold still. The wings are where it shows — the feathering is cut to follow the flash rather than a template.

At 58 mm it belongs on a desk or a shelf edge rather than on the floor.
